UNDERSTANDING THE CIPLE EXAM
If you’re planning to live in Portugal long-term or apply for citizenship, the CIPLE (Certificado Inicial de Português Língua Estrangeira) is your official proof of Portuguese proficiency. It’s an internationally recognised qualification issued by the CAPLE (Centro de Avaliação de Português Língua Estrangeira) and required for most residency and citizenship applications.
WHAT THE CIPLE COVERS
The exam assesses your ability to communicate in everyday situations, understanding conversations, expressing basic ideas, reading simple texts, and writing short messages or emails.
WHAT YOU NEED TO PASS
To pass the CIPLE, you’ll need to demonstrate an A2 level of Portuguese on the CEFR scale (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). This shows that you can manage daily interactions such as ordering food, asking for directions, chatting with neighbours, i.e understanding the essentials of life in Portugal.
